YMCA looks to community to help complete renovations at Camp Kirkwood

BURGAW, NC (WWAY) – Camp YMCA Kirkwood is the subject of a million dollar fundraising campaign to renovate its swimming pool, replace electrical service throughout the camp and improve its overall infrastructure. Renovation projects include new sanitary facilities, dining room roof replacement, kitchen upgrades, road repairs and more.

To date, over $ 819,000 has been raised to support the needs of Camp Kirkwood. Support comes from various churches, organizations, foundations and families who appreciate the importance of summer camps for youth in Southeastern North Carolina.

Located just outside Wilmington, Camp Kirkwood sits on 195 acres of pristine forest with a 10 acre lake for water sports, hiking trails for nature study, a swimming pool for cooling off and many other elements of the camp. Kirkwood Camp was originally built in 1960 by the Old Wilmington Rectory and Coastal Carolina Rectory Churches. In December 2009, the YMCA of Southeast North Carolina (formerly known as the Wilmington Family YMCA) partnered with the Friends of Camp Kirkwood to resume camp operations in an effort to revitalize its mission to serve young people. Today, the Camp Kirkwood YMCA is managed by the Friends of Camp Kirkwood and operated by the YMCA of Southeast North Carolina, serving over 900 campers and over 5,000 user group participants each year.

The million dollar fundraising campaign is led by the Friends of Camp Kirkwood and the YMCA. To date, nonprofits have collectively raised over 82% of their goal since the fundraising campaign began in November 2020.

This project has been on the drawing board for several years. When COVID necessitated the suspension of regular camping operations, Camp Kirkwood management decided to move forward with significant infrastructure improvements at its 60-year-old facility. Based on the initial pledges and pledges, Camp Kirkwood has completed renovations to the pool and electrical infrastructure. Camp YMCA Kirkwood is seeking additional support from the community to complete the planned improvements.

Gregory Miller, Chairman of the YMCA Camp Kirkwood Board of Directors, shares, “The theme of this campaign is ‘Pass It On’, based on the lyrics of an old camp song that many campers have learned and sung for the first time at Camp Kirkwood. We are stewards of this wonderful part of God’s creation and we work to ensure it serves children of all ages and helps change the lives of the next generation.

Since 2016, registrations at Camp Kirkwood have increased by 27%. In addition to offering a traditional summer camp experience, YMCA Camp Kirkwood operates year round, offering outdoor educational programs for school groups and other educational institutions as well as rental space for churches. , volunteer groups and more.

“While many people think of summer camps that operate on a seasonal basis, YMCA Camp Kirkwood hosts schools, service groups, clubs and organizations year round. Camp is a great place for team building activities, outdoor education and retreats, ”says Luke Dooley, Associate Director of YMCA Camp Kirkwood.
