Bartlesville hires new football coach and high school principals

The Bartlesville School Board voted unanimously Monday to appoint a new varsity football coach, principal and vice-principal for Bartlesville High School.

Harry Wright, 37, was recommended for the football coaching job by a 10-person search committee, including Bartlesville Public School District staff, coaches and parents, who screened more than 50 candidates.

BHS Deputy Principal Michael Harp has been appointed to the position of Principal of the school, where he will fill the position vacated by LaDonna Chancellor, who begins as the District’s Executive Director of Teaching and Learning. .

Harp has served as deputy director of BHS since 2018. He holds a master’s degree in educational administration, curriculum, and supervision from the University of Oklahoma and has been teaching for 10 years.

Brent Massey has been appointed as deputy director of BHS. Massey has been principal of Dewey Middle School since 2015 and has coordinated Dewey’s district testing since 2016.

Massey served on the Oklahoma State Superintendent’s Senior Advisory Council in 2019-20 and coordinated a successful Chromebooks for Dewey student technology grant. He previously taught social studies at Central Middle School in Bartlesville from 2009-2010 and at Madison Middle School from 2010-2015. year at Madison for 2014-2015. He previously taught social studies at Muskogee from 2007 to 2009.

Massey also served as the head varsity tennis coach for Bartlesville High School from 2009 to 2015 and was named Oklahoma 6A Boys Tennis Coach of the Year in 2011 and 2015. He previously served as an assistant tennis coach at Muskogee de 2007 to 2009.

Massey has been volunteering to coach soccer, basketball and youth soccer at Dewey since 2015 and is active in Bartlesville First Baptist Church. His wife, Tara, is a speech therapist at Richard Kane Elementary School and their three children attend public schools in Bartlesville.

For the past three years, Wright has worked as athletic director and head football coach at Lonoke Public Schools in Lonoke, Ark. During his tenure, the team was the 2019 4A-2 Conference Champion and 2020 4A-2 Conference Finalist. Over his 14-season coaching career, Wright has a 96-39 record.

Wright earned a bachelor’s degree from Bacone College in Muskogee, where he was a two-time NAIA All-American lineman and offensive player. His wife, Lauren Wright, graduated from Copan High School and the couple have a 9-year-old son.
